WALKING TOUR OF THE OLD SAN JUAN!

DAY 1 - SAN JUAN
WALKING TOUR OF THE OLD SAN JUAN!

At an easy pace, this walk should take you a couple of hours, but
our recommendation is that you should take half a day; remember, you
should take your tame to enter at some of the sites, relax, eat, drink and
and of course, shopping!
For those wishing a less strenous promenade, take the no-charge trolley
that circulate the city.
Your adventure begins at LA CASITA TOURISM INFORMATION CENTER, located
by the piers, it's a miniature pink buiding dating from 1937. LA CASITA
overlooks the San Juan Bay at Plaza De La Darsena. In there,
professional representants of the Tourism Company of Puerto Rico will answer
every question you may have, and help you with maps, car rental and lodging
reservations; suggest good local no-tourist trap restaurants, day or
night local hangouts, and much more. LA CASITA IS YOUR INFO PLACE IT IS
OPEN DAILY, THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS FROM 9:00 A.M. TO 8:00 P.M. YOU CAN
CALL [787] 722-1709.
To your left on the street behind LA CASITA, past a small plaza. And
you'll find PASEO DE LA PRINCESA. PRINCESS PATH YOU CAN HAVE A NICE
STROLLING THERE! A LITTLE BIT FORWARDS YOU GET TO SEE LA PRINCESA A JAIL,
BUT INSIDE THERE IS A GALLERY OPEN WEEKDAYS: 9:00A.M. -4:00P.M. INFO IS
[787] 721-2400. Lined with trees, street lamps and benches, this
promenade will lead you to a magnificent water fountain sculptured by Luis
Sanguino depicting Puerto Rico's diverse cultural heritage. As the
walking tour continues, it follows the curve of the bay and lead you to
the MURALLA, built from 1635 to 1641, using sandstone blocks. Measure up
to 20 feet in thickness, the wall was completed in late 1700s to
surround the entire colonnial. City and effectively guarded it against
enemies. YOU CAN KEEP ON WALKING YOU WON'T GET LOST, AN OFFICER IS ALWAYS
AROUND TO GIVE YOU THE MUCH NEEDED INSTRUCTIONS.
THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE LIKE YOU SO DON'T FOLLOW THEM, THEY ARE LOST
TOO! BUT IS COOL TO GET LOST YOU ALWAYS ENDING UP IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND
AT THE RIGHT MOMENT.
This promenade will lead you to PUERTA DE SAN JUAN, which allows you to
re-enter the city. Once through the doorway, make a right on Recinto
Oeste Street to visit LA FORTALEZA,built in 1540 and presently it's the
oldest
governor's mansion in use in the Western Hemisphere. Guided tours are
offered to visitors.
From LA FORTALEZA, return to Recinto Oeste Street and climb the
hill to reach the PLAZUELA DE LA ROGATIVA. This beautiful bronze
sculpture recreates the scene of a bishop and companions that frightened
British attacks to the city. Stop here and cool down with a famous
refreshing limbers, a fruit-flavored ice glass, a local delight that has been
a favorite through generations. Find a sign that says HAY LIMBERS
(not to confuse ingredients in the limbers, it just says limbers
available) next to a laudromat. Take some
pictures and enjoy one the most beautiful areas within the Old San
Juan.
To continue on, take the upper road along a plant-decked wall to a
doorway above a pink house.
This is one of the five entrances to CASA BLANCA,the residence of Juan
Ponce de Le󮠦or 250 years, now a museum. Go back to the lower doorway
and cross the vast grounds of EL FUERTE SAN FELIPE DEL MORRO FORT, one
of the majestic military fortifications rising 140 feet above the sea.
Built between 1540 and 1763, it's the most striking symbol of the Old
San Juan. Today, its small museum provides a complete history of the
fort. Tours, guest information and video presentations are available.
Return from EL MORRO along the main road. The large building ahead
is the ESCUELA DE ARTES PLASTICAS (School of Plastic Arts), if you are
here before 2 o'clock, grap a delicious sandwich and and a
cool drink at the lunch wagon facing the front sidewalk of the school.
Relax in the small plaza and watch students drawing or sculpturing
(some times the students are themselves a work of modern art).
After visiting the school, you'll reach an intersection, there you'll
see 2 restored buildings, the left buiding is the massiveCUARTEL DE
BALLAJᬠwhich formely housed Spanish troops and their families. On the
second floor is the MUSEO DE LAS AM钉CAS, featuring the most complete
exhibitions of artcrafts of the Americas.
The eastern door of the CUARTEL DE BALLAJᠯpens to PLAZA DEL QUINTO
CENTENARIO. The upper western level of this plaza provides a panoramic
view of the CEMENTERIO DEL VIEJO SAN JUAN, a 19th century cementary for
many prominents Puerto Ricans. Next to the top of the square you'll
reach PLAZA DE SAN JOSE, commanded by the statue of Ponce de Le󮬠made
from cannons captured during the unsuccesful
British attack in 1797. Next to it is the second oldest church in the
Western Hemisphere, the classic Spanish Gothic architectural style of
the 16th century IGLESIA SAN JOSE (San Jos頃hurch).
Walk down the hill on Cristo Street and midway through you'll find
the CATEDRAL DE SAN JUAN, a beautiful shrine built in 1540, and
carefully restored in the 19th century. Located in a marble tomb are
the remains of Juan Ponce de Le󮬦irst governor of Puerto Rico. At the
end of Cristo Street is LA CAPILLA DEL CRISTO dedicated to the Christ
of the Miracles who, according to the legend, saved a young man life in
1753 when his horse miracolous halted just before the two of them
jumped over the wall. Next to the chapel, there is a
PARQUE DE LAS PALOMAS, a relaxing tree covered haven for hundreds of
pigeons. Feeding is permited.
Head back to Fortaleza Street, turn right, and then turn left at
San Jose Street to find PLAZA DE ARMAS,a 16th century square now a
gathering place for many locals and it serves as the main plaza of the Old
San Juan. The small cafeteria 4 ESTACIONES, serving over 700 coffees
daily it's a popular meeting point. The kiosks and the
fountain are recently added. Surrounding the square are the Main Hall,
built to resemble the Madrid counterpart and the Department of State,
an exquisite example of neo-classical 19th century architecture.
You have concluded your walking tour of Old San Juan. The main
shopping streets are Cristo,Fortaleza and San Francisco, but all streets
are filled with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and
bars. Now relax and enjoy the city!
DAY 2 - NORTH EAST
Luquillo Here I Come!
To the northeast, at 45 minutes from San Juan through Route 191, you򬬠
find the only rain forest within the U.S. National Forest System, EL
YUNQUE. This forest receives over 100 billions gallons of rain water and
houses 240 tree species. The forest is poeticly covered with featherly
ferns, ropelike vines, and exotic flora under a tupid canopy of trees.
Also, you򬬠will want to bathe under the cascades of LA COCA and LA
MINA waterfalls. EL YUNQUE opens from 7:30am to 6:00pm. daily.
The hikins trails at EL YUNQUE are well-mantained and accesible, so try
to be there early and plan to stay the whole day. This forest is not to
be missed!
When in LUQUILLO (located next to EL YUNQUE), one must visit the
LUQUILLO PUBLIC BEACH. Open daily from 9 to 5,except Mondays, this worldly
reknown beach lures visitors with its calm ,blue waters. It offers a
unique program Sea without Barriers that allows the physical challenged
to enjoy one of God򳠧reatest gifts:beautiful beaches. Call 721-2800,
exts. 1545 and 1653 at Sports and Recreational Department for more
information.
A local tradition before or after hitting LUQUILLO BEACH is to visit
the KIOSCOS DE LUQUILLO, easily visible from the main highway. Local
delicacies and finger foods will excite your palate along with ice-cold
local beers or chilled coconut water straight from the hand picked
fruit.
